Marine Corps Raiders are special operations units originally created by the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II to conduct light amphibious infantry operations. The Edsons of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion and the Carlsons of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion are considered the first U.S. special operations units formed during the World War and fought II.
Although the Raiders were originally intended for special operations, they were used as regular infantry in most combat operations. This, coupled with dissatisfaction from other Marine Corps members that the Raiders were "the best of the best," led to the disbanding of the original Raiders.
